Nigeria Rejects US African Military Command

 <modified>2007-11-29T21:49+00:00

Nigeria has rejected plans to host the U. S. African military dominate or AFRICOM on the continent. The government's position was announced at the end of President Umaru Yar'Adua's meeting with express governors and several of the country's leading political figures. For VOA. Gilbert da Costa reports from Abuja.
The goal of U. S military's new Africa-wide command is to better defend America's strategic interests in Africa and assist African countries with military training and contrast prevention.
But a growing number of African countries - including Libya and South Africa - have expressed a concern over Africom's act to the continent. Many undergo expressed reservations that the act could signal an expansion of U. S influence on the continent and may focus primarily on protecting oil interests.
While Nigeria has been among the most vocal of critics this the first measure that Africa's most populous nation and a top source of U. S oil imports has come out publicly against the intend.
On Monday. Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua said he is also opposed to the U. S dominate establishing a presence elsewhere in West Africa.
Peter Egom a senior research fellow at the Nigerian Institute for International Affairs says the United States is primarily expanding its military presence in Africa to defend its interest in the region's oil resource.
"America does not have to come to Africa to argue her interest. American needs to undergo willing partners co-operative partners to defend American interests in Africa," said Egom.
Africom currently operates out of existing U. S bases on the continent with a headquarters in Stuttgart. Germany. Liberia settled by freed American slaves in the 1800s is the only African nation that has publicly offered to entertain a headquarters.
Soccer: DPR Korea outplay Nigeria 2-0 in World Cup Group B

 <modified>2007-11-11T18:57+00:00

CHENGDU. Southwest China. Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- DPR Korea sealed a 2-0 victory over Nigeria within the opening 21 minutes here on Friday to teach the five-time African champions what the quality of Dark Horses is. The former Asian champions which narrowly missed out their chances of making the quarterfinals in last edition of the tournament four years ago on the United States alter took a full dominance over the fling from the right beginning of their back up World Cup Group B bet. "We've taken the crucial win here today," said instruct Kim Kwang Min at a post-match touch conference. "If the Australian (Tammy Ogston) could have refereed more fair. I think the bet would be played with more highlights." Midfielder Kim Kyong Hwa made breakthrough for the twice former Asian champions swinging in a superb left command directly in the 17th minute. Just four minutes later. Kim launched another command and uncautioned skipper Ri Kum Suk came up to the roll from far point to continue in the second for the Koreans who stunned twice World Cup winners the United States with a 2-2 displace in Tuesday's opening be of the arguable Group of Death. Ri's second goal on 55 minutes was ruled offside after the established striker being picked up by a left wing go from Kil Son Hui. With the victory. DPR Korea moved up to the jointly top lay in Group B standings tying the United States which beat Sweden 2-0 earlier on Friday on 4 points from a win and a displace with both 4 goals for and 2 against. Compared with the other assort B be earlier on the day the DPR Korea-Nigeria bet went on a more physical way with the Koreans' midfielder Kim Kyong Hwa and send and captain Ri Kum Suk respectively being forced out of the ground in the 35th and 38th minute after challenges with compete players. Nigeria were outplayed for most of time making mainly their shooting attempts before the break with veteran striker Perpetua Nkwocha's double respectively at 15 and 44 both shot wide. Chiejine headed the ball inside the penalty box after just 7 minutes into the game but her pass was cleared by the Koreans with none of her teammates paced up for it. The 24-year-old again made a tight-angle tap after a solo run down the left go in the 34th minute but was easily saved by Korean keeper Jon Myong Hui. Coach Ntiero Effiom was only satisfied with the second half performance from his players and kept in up mood for advancing to the quarters though sitting temporarily on the furnish of the Group B delay after tying on both points and goal differential with Sweden. "The first half was very tough. We conceded two goals on early minutes and that made it change surface more difficult for us to go on," he said. "But in my object the players played a better bet after the end." "We granted three points to the Koreans but there still lies a change state wish for us to arrive the quarters. Actually we are full of expectations for the final group match against the U. S.. "Here's in the assort stage. Here's in the Group of Death. And everything is possible," he added.

Nigeria: When Public Service Becomes Personal Profit

 <modified>2007-11-05T14:38+00:00

Hardship allow: A Dissenting believe (Guardian. Sept 14) an op-ed written by Reuben Agati is a must read. He questions the proposed allowance increase for top public officials in Nigeria. Here are some of the recommendations:
Part-time Members of Federal bodies are to collect a sitting allow of N500. 000 per meeting
“As part of the proposed package the RMAFC is recommending an increase in what is called hardship allowance( a strange creation which first showed up in the recommended case of 2002). The idea is that the President the Vice President the Governors and their Deputies and Judges change a lot of hardship in discharging the responsibilities of their office. We are told that they bring home the bacon “seven days a week change surface when they are on holidays…
Consider also the proposed Constituency Allowance which is put at 250 per cent of annual basic salary for the President the Vice President the Governor and the Deputy Governor; and 25 per cent for Local Government Chairmen and Vice -Chairmen of Local Councils - 15 per cent. Constituency allow is one of the most abused sub-heads in the pay package for public officials including lawmakers. Another is the Legislative Aides allowances (for PA. SA domestic cater). Ordinarily political office holders are expected to answer their constituencies set up offices and back up to carry government closer to the populate through projects networking efforts and identification/communication of the populate’s priorities. In eight years however we undergo witnessed a situation whereby the politicians once elected turned their back on their electoral constituencies. Many of the Abuja lawmakers no longer wanted to identify with the electorate.
I discovered from the writeup that “members of the National Assembly - Senators and members of the accommodate of Representative - had been paid jumbo allowances (in the region of N48 million each) to take care of their pressing needs; to alter them lay down in Abuja.”
Is this a joke? express me these people are not serious about their “hardship allowance” proposal. Such allowances shouldn’t exist in the first talkless of seeking to increase it. How can we stop these old bats from squandering all the national wealth? This is absolutely ridiculous and we can’t just sit approve and watch them press Nigeria dry. Somebody do something!
If anyone deserves hardship allowance in Nigeria it is the downtrodden poor masses that move change surface boast of one full meal a day cant buy drugs for their dying relatives/children cant displace children to school for no money to pay fees cant change surface drop a decent mat to sleep on the floor any longer. Why should the rich get richer at the expense of the poor and then we sing “Nigeria yi ti gbogob wa ni” i e. Nigeria belongs to us all yeah right. Does this not explain the change magnitude in robberies etc in Nigeria? Its a crying compel. Misi calls out for someone to do something. Maybe we bloggers should create verbally and write electronic petitions to the powers that be in Nigeria starting from Yaradua himself communicating our disgust at these flagrant do by of all abusables in Nigeria. Nigeria belongs to everyone poor and rich young and old not to just a chosen few who have dabbled into politics. sing 14 reminds us that it is only the fool that says in his heart that there is no God.
Hheheheheh ah ah! why una dey communicate like this una no say woman work na hard bring home the bacon? ehn? you evaluate say to carry all those small small girls na easy be? no be small bring home the bacon be that oh! Seven days a week including weekends!haba!
Lol! I was laughing the first time I construe Reuben’s article and am laughing again. Politics is and always ordain be the most profitable business in the new Nigeria.
Our DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED RULERS forget that function should be the mantra. At the least PRETEND TO answer should be their mantra. But in a system where accountability does not exist what can I evaluate?
So they work 7 days a week and on the weekends? That is their job and if it is too hard for them they should depart and allow someone else to serve. So they need allowances to read newspapers? Let’s be honest those guys don’t construe! OBJ himself told us he doesn’t read newspapers and I am quite sure none of the political elite do either. Why should they? Newspapers are for the masses who may I add cannot drop them.
The RULERS should go online and construe the news like I do. You never heard me asking for an allow. Oh. I forgot. I am not a ruler. I am just one of the nameless faceless masses. Woe is me!
@ Misi & Omotaylor: Stop by nigerianlighthouse org and act in the SPEAK UP NIGERIA campaign. Or stop by the Facebook summon for the event. connect us in sending a communicate to Nigeria in commemoration of its Independence.
[…] If the forgive for the rotten infrastructure is funds then the government need to believe downsizing first before taking on more loans that some idiots will steal again..
Nigeria says no to AFRICOM

The Federal Government has begun moves to forbid the intend by the United States to establish a military locate in the Gulf of Guinea.. .
"Nigeria is not taking the air lightly at all and the government is not going to allow the US open any military base anywhere in the ECOWAS region. The arouse of the US government in the Gulf of Guinea has reinforced the commitment of the government to intensify its efforts at providing the needed security in the sub-region," the source said.
It was learnt that the Federal Government was worried by the terror warn raised by the US authorities last week and saw it as a ploy to label Nigeria and countries in the sub region as unsafe in request to get the opportunity to create a military base in the region.
"The government of this country is not ready for any act upon. What they cannot get through the back doors they be to get through blackmail. We are not going to succumb to that bet," the obtain said.
I think this can only be good news. While Nigeria's governments have not demonstrated any great responsiveness to the needs of her people to go out or established any reputation for good governance; letting the US recolonize the Niger Delta and the Gulf of Guinea ordain create a great deal more suffering. The present US government is not capable of running the US and has destroyed Iraq. Until the US can show both competence and good intentions all countries should be wary in their dealings with it.
In Akan symbolism there is a create by mental act of crossed crocodiles two joined crocodiles that overlap the same stomach. You can sight the description at the Akan Cultural Symbols Project by scrolling down the summon of Akan Political Beliefs. I have always been particularly fond of this as a symbol for the competing interests of constituents in a democracy. FUNTUMFUNAFU DENKYEM FUNAFU - JOINED CROCODILES Symbol of UNITY IN DIVERSITY. DEMOCRACY and UNITY OF intend The symbol is also referred to as odenkyem mmemu - Siamese twin crocodiles joined at the digest. From the proverb: Funtumfunafu denkyemmfunafu won afuru bomu nso wodidi a na worefom efiri se aduane ne de ye di no mene twitwi mu. Literal translation: Two headed crocodiles contend over food that goes to a common stomach because each relishes the food in its throat. This symbol in essence depicts the Akan notions about the inherent difficulties of reconciling individual and assort interests in a democratic system.
